Admission to ECE PhD Degree Program

Only MS degree programs in ECE and ISyE are offered at GT-Shanghai. Students who have completed their MS degree at GT-Shanghai are encouraged to pursue PhD studies at GT-Atlanta.

ECE MS degree program students who have passed the ECE PhD preliminary exam are automatically re-classified as PhD students and will not need to apply again for the ECE PhD degree program. However, if a student has remained out of GT for two or more consecutive terms (including the summer term), he/she must apply for readmission to GT before being allowed to take GT classes again.

GT-SJTU Dual-MS degree program students should register for ECE 7055 during the semester that they are not taking any other GT courses, in order to avoid losing GT student privileges.

Example 1: A GT-Shanghai student graduates with the GT MS degree in May (end of Spring term), and has passed the ECE PhD preliminary exam prior to the MS degree. She plans to enroll in the GT-Atlanta PhD program in August. The student will not need to apply for readmission, and will not need to take the PhD preliminary exam again.

Example 2: A GT-Shanghai student graduates with the GT MS degree in August (end of Summer term), and has passed the ECE PhD preliminary exam prior to the MS degree. He plans to enroll in the GT-Atlanta PhD program in the following January. The student will not need to apply for readmission, and will not need to take the PhD preliminary exam again.

Example 3: A GT-Shanghai student graduates with the GT MS degree in December (end of Fall term), and has passed the ECE PhD preliminary exam prior to the MS degree. She stays at SJTU to finish the SJTU MS thesis by the following March, and plans to enroll in the GT-Atlanta PhD program in August. The student will need to apply for readmission to GT, but will not need to take the PhD preliminary exam again.
