Georgia Tech-Shanghai
The Georgia Tech – Shanghai Initiative started in August 2004 with the signing of a cooperative agreement between Georgia Tech (GT) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in Shanghai, China. During May – July 2005, the first GT Shanghai Summer Program – a faculty-led undergraduate study abroad program took place at SJTU with 44 students participating. The Fall 2005 semester saw the implementation of the GT-SJTU undergraduate semester exchange program. Beginning in May 2006, GT graduate courses have been taught in Shanghai for students wishing to pursue a GT Masters degree, or GT-SJTU Dual-Masters degrees. GT-Shanghai has also assisted Atlanta students with finding internship opportunities in China, so they will be better prepared for joining the increasingly global-oriented workforce of the future.
Founded in 1896, SJTU is a leading engineering university comprised of several campuses, with 2,800+ faculty and nearly 38,000 full-time students. SJTU’s Xuhui and Minhang campuses serve as the base for GT-Shanghai operations. Course instruction is provided by GT faculty with rotational assignment to Shanghai. GT-Shanghai participants can expect the same academic rigor as in GT-Atlanta. Bi-directional student exchange is strongly encouraged.
Besides academic programs, GT and SJTU are also developing research programs of mutual interest. The Sino–U.S. Global Logistics Institute, led by GT and SJTU, was established in October 2005. Several other areas of collaborative research are also being pursued by GT and SJTU faculty.
